Frame - Platypus 2020-2021
Rivendell PLATYPUS
BUILT FOR: Everyday, all-weather riding on paved roads of any quality, and possibly a little dirt, too. The PLATYPUS is for any non-extreme use (it's not a mountain bike or a road racing bike). It's for fun, fitness, commuting, touring, transportation—just going places, doing things, living your life while moving around on a bicycle. The PLATYPUS is the bike you’ll ride more often than any other.
ALL WEATHER: Easily fendered, so you can ride it all year long.
With racks and luggage, you can tour. On any non-competitive road ride (the best kind), it’s as good as a road bike, and probably more comfortable. It descends more stably, safer, better, than 98 percent of the “professional” road bikes on the market today. Because it has a longer wheelbase.
FRAME: Our-designed SILVER (brand) CrMo tubing in dimensions we see fit. Geometry is dialed, it rides like all Rivendells. Designed for use with a swept-back bar like the Albatross, Billie, Choco, Bosco, Losco, or Tosco.
BRAKES: V-brakes (standard or mini) or cantilevers. We can advise.
TIRE CAPACITY: 45mm with fenders, 50mm without.
BRAZE-ONS: More than you’ll use. Easy to rack, fender.
LOAD CAPACITY: It’s hard to say. It depends on so many things we have no idea of and no control over. Let’s just say you can take it shopping and come back with lots of liquid, meat, and beans.
RIDER WEIGHT LIMIT?: Again, hard to say, it depends on so many things that are just hard to pin down. But we'll say...230lb.
BEAUTY: The PLATYPUS is fully lugged and crowned. From a purely aesthetic point of view, which is really subjective, it’s one of the prettier bikes on the market. We have good taste and work hard on those things. Like all beautiful, durable things, it will look better in 20 years than it does the day you get it. It’s a good combination of classic styling and Rivendell irreverence for tradition. We put all we had into the Platypus, and the result is a beautiful, modern mixte. It’s our style, completely.
COLORS: Lime-Olive—not as sour as lime, not as dreary as olive; and Blilver, a cross between blue and silver. Both have a little pearl, which pops in the sun and disappears in the shade or on a cloudy day.
COMES WITH IT, AND WORTH AT LEAST $120: Headset, bottom bracket, and seat post (26.8).
PBH Minimums
50cm (fits 650B wheels): 73cm riders up to about 5-5
55cm (fits 700C wheels): 78cm riders up to 5-11
60cm (fits 700c wheels): 83cm riders to 6-5 (and as short as 5-8)
most riders can fit two sizes. When that's the case for you, go bigger...unless you're 5-8 and just can't wrap thy noggin around the idea of riding a 60.
GETTING STARTED ON A COMPLETE BIKE
To end up with a fully realized, maximallisimo PLATYPUS, let us advise you. Whether or not you get the parts from us, the following suggestions are worth listening to.
HANDLEBARS: Swept-back style. The top tubes were spec'd assuming a swept-bag bar. If you want to ride a traditional flat bar, get another bike.
SHIFTERS: If you have a few bikes now, you'll have some preferences—friction shifters or indexing? Friction gives you more input, and because of that, it can be either more frustrating or more satisfying. Indexing eliminates the skill in and satisfaction of the human-machine interaction, but if you just want to get the gear, it's the surest way to go. The overall bike will be super no matter.
WHEELS & TIRES: If you weigh under 140lb and won't load it up and want it super-zippy, get Rich here to build you some light wheels on rims at least 24mm wide. Ride light tires, but there's no reason in the world to ride tires skinnier than 38mm
If you want all-around versatile wheels and you weigh a normal amount, ride Atlas rims and 42 to 50mm tires with a road-like tread. There are plenty, we're happy to pick 'em for you.
GEARING: If you have a bike now, you'll have some idea of the gears you need to get up the local hills. Also, consider the same hills when you're tired and have a load of groceries; or the gearing needs of another family member or a feeble house guest.
Single: 38 to 42t ring? Double: 42 x 26 or 30; or 38 x 24. Triple: 44 x 34 x 24.
DERAILERS: Performance is unrelated to price. Shimano's best-designs are the low-priced Altus and Acera. Any SunRace, MicroShift, or Shimano derailer will be super, just make sure (have us make sure!) it works with the shifter, chain, and gearing. If, as a matter of principle, you want the most expensive derailers, that's fine, and the bike is worthy of them. But they won't shift better than cheap ones, and often they don't look even as good. COVID has led to component shortages, and we've scrambled and are still scrambling to have a decent selection. Don't sweat derailers.
